The Sun, the Thunder, and the River

This hymn — titled “Saule, Pērkons, Daugava” — is an unofficial national anthem of Latvia. I’m awed by how this stadium of thousands can sing in a bare whisper, only to explode with the chorus. Latvian and Lithuanian are the most pleasing languages to the human ear, after French. Enjoy.

Translated into English:

The Sun placed Latvia
Where the ends of the Earth meet
The white sea, the green earth
Latvia had the key to the gate
And guarded the river Daugava

Strangers broke the gate
The key fell into the sea
Thunder hurled a blue lightning bolt
From the devils he took the key
Latvia locked up death alive
The white sea, the green earth

The Sun placed Latvia by the edge of the white sea
The wind raised a sandstorm
What can Latvia’s children drink?
The water of life and the water of death
Flowed into the river Daugava

I dip my fingertip in the river
I feel both in my soul:
The water of death and the water of life
The Sun is our mother
Daugava, nursemaid of our pain
Thunder, who strikes the devils
He is our father

The sun is our mother
Daugava, nursemaid of our pain
Thunder, who strikes the devils
He is our father

  1. I know you guys get annoyed when “Nicole” questions white peoples use of the “white” classification instead of a national or ethnic classification; but she does raise an important question that every white person should resolve for him or herself.

If a person describes themselves as a “white person”, what does that tell me? What does that tell you?

In contrast, if a person describes themselves as “Lithuanian”, or Latvian; have you received more or less information about them?

Some white people are racists, some are not; so how does describing yourself as white clarify your identity to both other people AND yourself BETTER than a religious, national or political description?

Even LGBT may be a more useful description than “white.”

BTW, I got no dog in this hunt; you call yourself what you want; but you can’t hide from this issue (and duck me like Greg Eliot)

Here is a very interesting interview by Tom Sunic of a guy who wrote a book called “The Wasp Question.” I don’t think they planned it, but this very issue came up, and they addressed it quite vigorously; at points it almost sounds like they are getting in an argument; but Sunic does a great job of keeping the issue constructive. Im sure he understood the necessity of Fraser defending his position (and his book…)

To sum up the discussion; Sunic, being a European (Croat?), and being forced to deal most intimately with the problems of European nationalism; he is arguing for the greater adoption of the category of “white.”

In contrast, Fraser, with his book is arguing the category of “white” strips Europeans of the very key to their vitality, creativity and drive… resulting in a vague, obtuse nonculture known (and often ridiculed) as “white.”

(note: it is my suspicion Fraser substituted the term “WASP” for “white”)

  2. Funny how “White” serves as a useful descriptor when white people are being criticized/attacked/slandered by non-white races (blacks, mestizos, etc.) but when White people *themselves* use the word to describe themselves they are questioned on it by sophist fleas.

By the same token “Whites” are a very real group of people when we’re rationing out seats in grad school and law school and in government contracts. But when Whites *themselves* use the same word in discussions of their interests as Whites (vis a vis the non-White races) suddenly the word is deeply flawed.

I mean, what could explain it? Golly, I just can’t figure it out!

Is anyone going to bother responding to Thwack’s 9th grade level double-talk? Because I’m not.

Looks like you did; just not very intelligently.

Thats because you guys bought into the concept of “white” when it was first raised; you supported and defended it all along because of the real and/or imagined benefits you thought it gave.

But even now that you are being hung with your own rope, you still wont get rid of it.

I suspect all this alleged abuse and mistreatment of white people does not rise to the level of people denying they are white.

Until it does, such complaints cannot be taken seriously.

  5. sophist flea,

Saying someone “buys in” to the concept of white is as absurd as saying someone “buys in” to the concept of “water” or “rock” or “blue.” There’s nothing whatsoever to buy in to. Reality exists whether anyone “buys in” or not. The reality is there are a multitude of races who choose certain combinations of letters to identify themselves. The combination of letters is not important–the underlying reality is.

Here’s another reality: Whites are a minority not just in places like California but in places like planet Earth. Like any other minority, whites have distinct interests and it behooves them to have a word to identify themselves and their interests for convenience’s sake.

Oh, speaking of alleged abuse and mistreatment, how come the non-White races relentlessly stream into White countries if White racism is a meaningful problem? Kind of insane to seek to get closer to your oppressors.

  6. Thwack: if anyone here wants to read wild metaphoric accusations against Whites, he can find Nicole over at CH. I don’t want you doing that here. My other two requests to you: (1) do not question the existence or form of White racial identity. That is only for us to discuss. What is and what isn’t White is not a conversation that you are in a position to contribute meaningfully to. (2) This applies solely to you based on your past performance: comment less. Post no more than one comment per thread, and do not respond to anyone who disagrees with you. Niggerish quarrelsomeness and trash-talking is not how White men develop an understanding about things. I don’t want you to respond to this comment either.

All: Part III of “Be the Boss” will be posted later today or early tomorrow.

  7. PA, Im done with your blog; Im not going to participate subject to your niggerish rules.

Next time try to act like a man and tell me to my face you don’t want me to participate.

You chose a total bitch move; why am I not surprised?
